How do I find my pet’s microchip number?

Wondering out how to find out what your pet’s microchip number is? Read on as we let you know where you can find out this super important bit of information!

Check your paperwork and documents for your microchip number

Usually, when you’ve been there when the vet has implanted the chip, they will have provided you with some paperwork that will include your microchip number which is typically 15 digits long. Some microchip numbers may be shorter though and may also contain a combination of letters or numbers.

You may have a vaccination document or certificate from your vet which will also include your pet’s microchip number. If you’ve got a pet passport, the microchip number will also be presented on here.

If you bought your dog from a breeder, the microchip number will also be on your paperwork. The same applies if you’ve adopted an animal from a rescue home- the paperwork will have all of the relevant information that you need.

Check your emails for your microchip number

If you have registered your contact details with a microchip database, they may have emailed you to let you know that your pet has been chipped and provide you with the number within the email.

We’d recommend you search for the following terms in your email and this should do the trick :

  • microchip number
  • microchip database
  • chip number
  • your pet’s name and microchip number
  • search for the following databases – petlog, identibase, anibase, pettrac, smarttrace, chipworks, animal tracker

Usually, a quick search of the above, will bring back an email that they sent you and often they include the microchip numbers in the body of the email

Contact your vet

If you call your vet, they may be able to provide you with the details of your microchip over the phone if they have this already stored in their practice management system, especially if they were the ones who microchipped your pet.

If all of the above fails, don’t worry, there’s one more way that you can find out your pet’s microchip number and that’s by booking an appointment with your vet to have them scan your pet for their microchip.

This is a quick and painless procedure that only takes a few seconds and will enable the vet to get your pet’s microchip number which they can then give to you.

Once you have your pet’s microchip number, it is important to keep this safe and make a note of it somewhere so that you can easily find it if you ever need to.

Ensure your pet’s microchip details are up to date on a compliant database

Finally, the last but important step is to ensure that your pet’s microchip is stored on a government compliant microchipping database. If your details are not kept up to date, there are potential fines of up to £500.

One in three pet owners do not know which microchip database their pet’s details are stored on, with the likely outcome being that they are also therefore inaccurate, especially if pet owners have moved address or changed telephone numbers.

Don’t worry, we’re at hand – with our free switching service, Pet Database is helping pet owners handle this important piece of admin and it only takes a minute of your time, and we’re here to hold your hand.
